about

SEE THE FOREST
At easter 2022, I joined a gaggle of wonderful creative types camping in takayna/Tarkine in the middle of ancient rainforest. This was an annual artists’ camp organized by the Bob Brown Foundation who have been fighting for years to protect this forest from logging and mining pursuits.
We were near the site of a proposed tailings dam that MMG mine would like to build…to transform an ancient forest to a irreversible scar of toxic waste.
Unimaginable!

All the percussion in this song is recorded in the forest - by tapping old logs, shaking ferns and leaves, etc along to a click track.
Written, performed and recorded by Rose Turtle Ertler
Spoken word by Jenny Weber - Campaign Manager at Bob Brown Foundation
Chanting by tree climbers/protestors standing ground in takayna

More information about the takayna campaign here:

There is a video for this song by Anna Brozek with lots of amazing footage from Bob Brown Foundation videographers.

lyrics

SEE THE FOREST

It doesn’t make sense to sell
This little patch of the world
As I stand on the ground that’s been here so long

It makes more sense to sing and yell
For this little corner of the world
And tell all the people what’s really going on

But we’ve gotta see the forest for the trees
All the layers of the history beneath
We’ve gotta see the forest for the trees
For the wild
For the wild
For...
the trees

<<Spoken: Starting at the forest floor and the importance of the soil;
all the myrtle leaves that fall and create layers and layers of more soil enriching important factors;
and then the forest goes up in an elevator of colour because you have ferns, mothershield ferns, you’ve got the the antarctica dicksonia ferns;
and then you've got the canopy of smaller trees, leatherwoods the green of the sassafrass;
and towering out above it can be the ancient myrtle canopy;
and some places just before the rainforest, is all it is, you have tall eucalyptus>>

It does not make sense today
It does not make sense, no way
When the owl and the eagle are flying round

It doesn’t make sense to be
It does not make sense to me
And all of the people there standing ground

But we’ve gotta see the forest for the trees
All the layers of the history beneath
We’ve gotta see the forest for the trees
For the wild
For the wild
For
the
trees
